Nancy Paul builds up layers of texture on glass and stone using acrylic media, alternating with glazes and scrumbles of acrylic pigment, to create richly evocative, three-dimensional art. She draws, paints, and collages on stone, carving her initial N by way of signature. For her glass pieces, she incorporates resin into the process to ensure adhesion.


Painted Relief Tiles

Nancy obtains unfinished stone tiles (recycled when available), cleans them to remove surface dirt and grease, and leaves them to dry before sealing with clear acrylic gesso.

She then makes a graphite sketch, either directly on the tile or on paper for transfer by means of acrylic polymer medium.

The type of paper used for the collage depends on the size and complexity of the drawing) for transfer to the stone; this method allows for more control of the process than direct drawing, plus results in a slightly raised outline, important to distinction of the eventual relief from the background.

Nancy then builds up layers of acrylic media of and paint, drying between applications. She works the surface to create ridges and texture. Scrumbling and glazing accentuate the peaks and hollows.

Painted Sawn Stone

Essentially the same method as above. The stone is obtained from quarries or contractors. If the stone is to be displayed outdoors, she applies extra coats of acrylic UV protectant.

Collaged Stone Pieces

Nancy slices her original photographs into strips of varying shape and size, then applies them with acrylic polymer medium to a clean, dry, stone face sealed with clear gesso. UV protectant is then applied.


Tempered, textured glass is cut to size, including as needed drilled holes for hanging unframed by fish line or fine wire. The painting process is often much as described for relief stone tiles, with the essential additional step of using resin to ensure adhesion of the paint (+/- drawing).
